I agree with JR Sapp. Start at the valve for tire removal and start opposite the valve for remounting. Darryl's comment explains quite eloquently why it should be done this way.

Hi Alex,I have not been on a bike for near 30 yrs and back then it was a simple. 1+1 so not to much bother. My son gave me a trek 21 gear and I was a little worried about using gears ,fixing puncture's etc but having found this terrific site of yours I am gaining confidence as I read . Thank you.

Regards Fergal

I agree with JR Sapp above re removal and refitting. Most wheels have a well in the center which has the sole purpose of reducing the effective diameter when the bead is pushed into it. This allows the opposite side of the tyre to pass over the rim edge without stretching. However the bead cannot slip into the well at the valve because the valve is in the way. Try remounting the tyre starting opposite the valve without levers. When you get to the last tight bit, return to the start point and squeeze the tyre so it is in the well as far round as you can and the last bit should pop over with little force.

Thanks Bill. I haven't used them myself, but I've heard they are not as effective as the glue type.

Alex,

I see you explain very well here how to properly patch a tire. What do you think of the self adhesive patches?
